My singing background was in school/university/church choirs and I added karaoke about 15 years ago. Cherry (my wife) was worried I was straining my voice singing karaoke. A learn to sing invitation came through the door in early 2014 from Hereward Harmony (Peterborough). The LTS was led by Si Hilton (ex-MD, Cambridge Chord Company, and Lead of The Eclectic Quartet). At that stage I was already a confident singer, but with poor vocal technique. Via Hereward Harmony, I got a free BABS40 place at Harmony College in 2015, and have been hooked ever since.
About 25 years ago, Shannon Express held an open evening in Royston where we lived, about 14 miles from their base and my wife went along, heard about their sister chorus Phoenix and has been a stalwart ever since, with multiple medals to her name. My daughter joined when she was 14 and was on the front row for 15 years until starting a family.
My wife brought an eye-catching Shannon Express LTS flyer home one evening about 8 years ago. I now sing with 2 men’s and 2 mixed choruses and am librarian (and committee member) for one of each. Barbershop has become a full-time “job” – and I love it!
