Some years ago, after years of singing, my son David (Scooby) told me about a weekend of singing (Harmony College)he was hoping to attend and suggested I may also enjoy the challenge. He had joined Anvil Chorus and attended the Youth chorus meeting as suggested by Duncan. I thought it would be an opportunity to spend time with him and visited the Essex Chordsmen, or Chelmsford Star Hamony Club as they were then. On my first attendance I was quickly auditioned and asked if I would join their Lead section as they had just lost a couple of leads recently. I tried to explain I was only there to see a little of what Barbershop was about, but there seemed to be no escape! I stayed with them, doing warm ups and being assistant section leader, organising and jointly running a LTS course, and eventually became chairman for a couple of years, also MC ing at Singouts. I attended every HC, Convention I could even after leaving the group, until I found another learn to sing course as a tenor, which eventually became The VIPs. On losing two MDs in quick succession, Pete Chapman and I decided to run the club jointly with a skeleton of about a dozen guys who stuck with us, and after three years I think we are now well on the way back up, with well received singouts and improving scores year on year at convention. Without my son wanting someone to fund his HC attendance back in 2008 I wouldn’t know much about our wonderful hobby!
